Approaching Synchronous Communication Tools: Tapped In

Dear Friends,  group

We are finishing our first week, and you have already explored some asynchronous tools, the distribution list, the forum and the blog. We will start now “playing” with synchronous tools, that is, real time communication, and the first place we have visited is Tapped In

Thanks to the almost 40 participants who joined us today :-)

tappedin

Some of you had already had the opportunity to visit this community, but for others this was the first time.

Whether you are a newcomer or an experienced visitor, please, let’s share our opinions on this synchronous experience:

  • How is it different from interacting with asynchronous tools?
  • How do you feel?
  • Which one would you prefer for your studenst? Why?
  • What advantages and drawbacks do you perceive?

If you missed the session , read the chatlog (also available on our chatsessions web page ), and tell us what it feels like reading the trascript of a chat where you have not participated:

  • Is it difficult to follow the flow of the conversation?
  • Are transcripts helpful to get the information you were expecting to find?
  • Can you describe the discourse of the chat?

Well, and share whatever ideas you have :-)

Let’s keep blogging!

Cheers,

Daf   witch

Although it was not my first time (and I even have an office at TI) I can´t say I am experienced. I truly enjoyed the session -from a distance- and was impressed at how quickly participants learned how to jump to different locations, use text commands and help peers. I was aware that the more participation there was, the faster the lines would scroll up so I kept absolutely quiet (unbelievable for those that know me). A main drawback I see is having a large group of students or participants who are not familiar with the tool. I guess that´s why there are so frequent guided tours at the reception. I see it has a lot of potential, like the course Sharon has for her business English students. Go and have a look at her office. It´s really worth the visit. Our Tapped in session was a great place to start our synchronous events.

    Hi there,
I enjoyed this session a lot. I always do!
I think that real time communication is one of the great potentials of the Internet. It can also be really profitable and motivating for students, as a new means of learning and interacting. However, some communication rules have to established in order to avoid caos! :)
I think text chat can work pretty well with small classes.
It was great to meet so many of you there.
    BJ you were great too!
Kudos all the way from Portugal!

So here goes again, my second attempt :-)

I loved the group learning experience today. This ‘field trip’ perfectly illustrated how important it is to follow ground rules, to explore without fear of being ‘judged’ or ‘criticised’ and to have producers or co-moderators to assist individuals in order to maintain the group dynamics.

I’ve been on ‘jungle tours’ which have been confusing, frustrating, demotivating, boring and total info overload. Thank you BJ for your expertise today in showing us just enough and not too much.

Now, we can all go back to ‘play’ :-) )

I had some difficulties reaching the reception room but when I finally managed to catch up with the group I really loved the tour. I am an inexperienced TI office owner and after signing in I was stuck in my office and could not get into the Reception Room – AnaD, Hala and Rita did their best to rescue me – thank you. My open door icon next to the chat window refused to work, however, after leaving the session and joining it again it changed its mind.
I find chat much more exciting than asynchronous communication – it’s a wonderful feeling to be talking in real time to so many people from so many different places. But, as already pointed out by Berta, chat can be quite difficult to follow when there are many participants.
Thanks again for this wonderful experience.

    Hello to all,
I enjoyed the TI tour. It was a large group and yes the text moved quickly. However, today I learned from Wex how to detach my chat, which then is a bigger chat screen, what a new experience! Thanks to Wex.
I learned a lot, and whatever people say about how impersonal computers will make our lives, IT IS NOT TRUE. Already this week I have made some new friends, shared favorite foods and meals, interests and computer ideas, all while learning about technology. This is a great experience!
I read the transcript after I left the chat and I still was able to get good information from the transcript. Not as much fun, but still valuable. Thanks,
    CherylO

Just read the log, looked fun. Sorry I couldn’t make it.
Everyone seemed pretty well behaved this year! I learned how to think . o O (after all these years) from the chatlog, but couldn’t see an answer to the question ‘Is this just a Tapped In thing, or does the /th thing work in any chat envronment?’

  • 7    Kat // Jan 22, 2006 at 2:39 pm

I really enjoyed the tour yesterday (Saturday). About 5 minutes into it I detached the chat window and increased the font which made it much easier to follow. Before that it was moving too fast to read and I was a bit frustrated. This feeling disappeared once I could read the chat more comfortably.

LeighZ made a comment about it being like a bunch of 7th graders on a field trip which really made me laugh. It was so true. Everyone was excited and chatty and that was great. Such a friendly atmosphere and so like our Webhead leaders/moderators.

I think the Tapped In environment is really interesting, but as DennisN said the screens are crammed full of information. From a usability perspective I would have to agree. I’ve done quite a bit of work involving web usability and interfaces and where some things are counter intuitive users may have problems. I’m not sure how much can be changed, although someone mentioned at the chat today (Sunday) that JeffC was the man to speak to about that.

From a functionality point of view I do feel that Tapped In tried very hard (and succeeds in) trying to create a type of reality. Other tools such as Elluminate and Skype are more concerned about the functions they are used for rather than trying to recreate reality and are therefore (imho) are easier to use. Tapped In does allow a very different type of interaction (i.e. wandering into someone’s office or bumping into someone in reception) in a way that wouldn’t happen in other online environments.

I’ll stop writing now as that was rather a lot! ;-)

  • 8    Amanda // Jan 22, 2006 at 3:41 pm

I’m afraid I didn’t make it to the Tour but I have registered with Tapped In now and hoped the chatlog would show me what it’s all about. However, I find the transcript very difficult to follow! (Is it just me?) I guess I was hoping for a sort of Tutorial but I still find myself completely in the dark about Tapped In.

I also found the Tapped In site quite Orwellian – a huge and scarily impersonal ‘cyber building’ in which I quickly became lost. I’m really hoping there’ll be another tour of Tapped In for those like me who are left quaking in their boots!

  • 9    Daf // Jan 22, 2006 at 4:02 pm

    Hi Amanda,

Sorry you missed the tour. Tapped In is a huge community of educators where you can attend different free workshops every day, and you can also create your own virtual office. The chatlog is not a tutorial but the actual action (conversation) taking place during the chat. Partcipants were trying out different things according to BJ’s instructions and it is reflected in the chatlog. There tours at different hours to please members from different time zones. You can see the schedule of tours and workshops:
    here
There is always someone at the reception to give you a hand if you ask for help.
    Hope you try it again!

    Hi Claire,

The (/th ) and (:action) commands are exclusive to Tapped In, you cannot use them in YM or MSN.

    cheers,

    Daf

I`m sorry I wasn´t able to take part in the tour.Firstly, because it was my niece´s birthday party and also because I´m lost with the time difference. Can anybody help? I’m in Brasilia and to which city should I convert the time zone to know the right time?
I’m not new at Tapped In.Carla Arena has already shown me the way!Jeff Cooper gave us a tour on a workshop Carla gave at a BrazTesol meeting.I have my own office and everybody is welcome there! Chatting with people that have the same aims that you is something comforting .Also , it’s stimulating to see that you can share you experience and learn so much!

I feel fascinated about the TI experience. I’d have never thought I’d be able to open and ‘furnish’ my office. Thanks to my buddies I first visited some offices and it was there that I discovered what use I could give to it. Then, there came the ‘doing’ and cosmetic touches. I’m proud to say I didn’t do it alone. My new BAW friends would give advice, show the route, check the ‘look’, even take the trouble of editing photos! Text chat was not my piece of cake until I took this experiential TI tour. BjB’s work … flawless. Still amazed at the sense of immediacy there.

Now that I see the purpose of chat and have lived the whole thing, I will try it with my students. I wonder how much more they are missing because of me. A lot, no doubt. Anyway, I already feel a one-week old here and with your support I will pluck up courage!

    Hugs!
    Analia

I learned from my BAW friends too. That is what it is all about! I am enjoying this and look forward to doing my homework.
    Hugs to all too!

DearAnalía, think of all the things your students will learn because of you! You’re a true webhead!

I enjoyed the week1 chats – relaxed and cosy atmosphere. At first I was surprised everybody talked about anything that came to mind; I thought we were supposed to stick to a topic. BUT now I believe that’s exactly what I like – several threads, many ideas and topics (and may friendly hugs). Everybody could find a piece of useful info.

  • 16    Nina // Jan 25, 2006 at 9:01 pm

The TI tour was my very first experience with chat. I really enjoyed it. It was frustrating when I couldn’t figure out how to get to Reception or when everyone left the room and I couldn’t figure out how to get where they had gone–but fortunately, there were helpers who smoothed out the rough spots. Since Saturday I have gone back a few times (Sunday to WIA and Monday by myself, showing a colleague) and have gained some little proficiency, but I still can’t figure out how to furnish my office….

    Dear bloggers,

You cannot imagine how happy I feel when I read the comments on your successful experiences, and how you overcome obstacles with the help of helping fellows…. and we are only in week 2 :-)

We know it is difficult at the beginning because this is not a formal, traditional course, but once you get the gist of our approach, your wings are open to reach as far and high as everyone want and can.

    Way to go!!!

  • 18    Ana Maria // Jan 26, 2006 at 9:35 pm

    Dear Daf:
It was quite an experience being in Tapped In. I was still gettin used to send messages to BaW when there I was in the middle of cyberspace seeing so many wonderful people communicating. It isn’t easy for me to cope with that much information for the moment so I think I’ll take it step by step unitl I feel sure of using these new web tools. So for the moment I’ll be more of a lurker. Any way, I’ll try to give my comments in between my busy schedule.
Congrats for such a wonderful team work and the warmth that I sense in this group.
    Ana Maria

I found the TI tour fascinating! It was challenging for me, too, at first, to follow the different layers of communication and all the chatting comments and symbols, but then I started thinking of it as a play, where sometimes the asides are as vital as the main action of drama! Come to think of it, that’s pretty much like f2f life as well, isn’t it? I found that as I participated, not even thoroughly understanding everything intellectually, it started to sink in. And some of the chat helped me anchor a few (of the dozens!) of names. I really had fun and thank you for your enthusiasm, preparation and fine work.
